Missing Repeater Firearm Recovered From Negombo Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The repeater firearm that went missing following the recent clash at the Negombo Prison has been recovered.

Department of Prisons says the firearm was found inside the prison premises. 

It had gone missing after a clash broke out between two groups linked to drug trafficking and organized crime at the facility on July 6.

Meanwhile, the Prisons Department says steps will be taken in the coming days to house inmates at the Old Bogambara Prison premises in Kandy. 

An Extraordinary Gazette Notification was issued to establish a new prison at the site.

The Bogambara Prison was officially closed in 2014 after authorities determined that its aging infrastructure was inadequate to meet modern security and administrative requirements. 

Inmates were subsequently transferred to the new prison complex in Pallekele.
