Colombo (News 1st): International Workers’ Day is being marked today.
This year marks the 140th International Workers’ Day.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake mentioned in his May Day message that the sole objective is to protect the rights of working people and build a more secure economy, ensuring a better future for children free from suffering and hardship.
He noted that working people in Sri Lanka are marking this day at a crucial time, as the country records economic progress despite global conflicts.
The President also expressed gratitude to workers who have carried the burden during recent major challenges, including US tariffs, Cyclone Ditva, and the war in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, in her May’ Day message, said the government’s main goal is to ensure fair and equal access for all citizens.
She stated that it is the responsibility of the government to create conditions where everyone can lead a dignified working life.
The Prime Minister added that key priorities include establishing a national social security system that recognizes unpaid labour and ensuring protection for such workers.
