COLOMBO (News 1st); The Global Walk For Peace In The Island Of Peace commenced its third day this morning (24) from the premises of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
The day’s walk is scheduled to conclude at the Beligammana Raja Maha Vihara in Kegalle, some 40 kilometers away from Kandy.
The Global Walk For Peace In The Island Of Peace is being held at the request of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with the support of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.
The Maharaja Media Network is the Official Media and Coordination Partner for the Sri Lankan chapter of the Global Walk for Peace.
On the first day of the walk, members of the Maha Sangha, including Venerable Pannakara Thera from Vietnam, accompanied by the famous certified service dog 'Aloka', proceeded from the Rangiri Dambulla Raja Maha Vihara to the Matale Aluvihara, covering a distance of nearly 47 kilometres.
The following day, the Maha Sangha walked from the Matale Aluvihara to the historic city of Senkadagala (Kandy). Last night, they met with the Mahanayake Theras of the Asgiriya and Malwatte chapters and received their blessings.
Before commencing the third day of the peace walk this morning, Venerable Pannakara Thera of Vietnam and the accompanying Maha Sangha paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) and received blessings. They also obtained the blessings of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Mahanayake Theras.
Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya was among those who were present at the event.
As the Maha Sangha proceeded carrying the message of peace, thousands of people gathered along the roadside in Kandy to witness the walk, and obtain blessings.
The peace walk is scheduled to proceed today via Peradeniya, Pilimathalawa, Kadugannawa, and Mawanella before reaching the Beligammana Raja Maha Vihara in Kegalle.
Tomorrow, the walk will resume from the Beligammana Raja Maha Vihara and proceed to Tholangamuwa Central College. On April 26, the peace walk will continue from Tholangamuwa Central College to Yakkala Chandrajothi College.
On April 27, the walk will begin from Yakkala Chandrajothi College and is scheduled to conclude that day at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.
On April 28, the peace walk will depart from the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara and arrive at Independence Square by 4.00 pm. At that time, a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi will be diplomatically handed over by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Maha Sangha who have arrived from the United States.
Following this, the “Global Walk For Peace In The Island Of Peace” will conclude after a procession from Independence Square, passing the Maharaja Media Network head office premises, and arriving at the Gangaramaya Temple.
