COLOMBO (News 1st) – The India national cricket team defeated the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India.

With the victory, India also created history by becoming the first team to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in back-to-back editions.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to field first in the highly anticipated final.

Batting first, India delivered a commanding batting performance, posting 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Sanju Samson top-scored with a blistering 89 off 46 balls, striking five fours and eight sixes. Abhishek Sharma provided a rapid start with 52 runs off just 21 deliveries, while Ishan Kishan added a quickfire 54 from 25 balls.

India raced to 92 without loss in the powerplay and maintained the momentum throughout the innings. A strong partnership between Samson and Kishan propelled the total beyond 200 before the 15th over. In the closing stages, Shivam Dube smashed an unbeaten 26 off 8 balls to give India a powerful finish.

James Neesham was the most successful bowler for New Zealand with 3 wickets, while Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry picked up one wicket each.

Chasing a daunting target of 256, New Zealand struggled to maintain the required run rate despite a strong effort from Tim Seifert, who scored 52 off 26 balls. Finn Allen made 9 runs, while Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips fell cheaply as India struck regularly.

Daryl Mitchell scored 17, while captain Mitchell Santner contributed a fighting 43 off 35 balls, but the New Zealand batting line-up failed to build significant partnerships.

India’s bowling attack maintained tight control throughout the innings, with Jasprit Bumrah producing a standout performance, claiming 4 wickets for just 15 runs in his four overs. Axar Patel supported well with 3 for 27, while Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy and Abhishek Sharma picked up one wicket each.

New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, sealing a comprehensive 96-run victory for India and confirming their historic back-to-back ICC Men's T20 World Cup triumph.
