COLOMBO (News 1st); New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has unintentionally become a cultural sensation among Sri Lankans after a playful Instagram exchange with Shenuque Tissera blossomed into an unexpectedly heartfelt tribute to the Sri Lankan community.

It began innocently enough: Tissera, in his trademark comedic style, teased the 34‑year‑old mayor for achieving political greatness at an age that instantly raises the expectations of brown parents worldwide. With a mix of mock frustration and affection, he asked the question many Sri Lankan mothers would undoubtedly echo: How does one become a “good Sri Lankan boy”?

Mamdani didn’t miss a beat. Instead of offering the predictable advice on discipline, education or family values, he began with a warm and familiar greeting, one that immediately resonated across Sri Lankan households: 'Hello, auntie.'

It was a simple gesture, but one loaded with cultural fluency. And then Mamdani delivered the twist that turned a casual Instagram clip into a viral cultural moment.

Mamdani revealed that his core piece of advice, 'Never let them know your next move,' was, in his view, deeply Sri Lankan in spirit. And to prove it, he reached into the heart of Sri Lankan pride: cricket.

Drawing inspiration from Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka’s legendary spin wizard, Mamdani reminded viewers of the famed doosra, the deceptive delivery that baffled batsmen and elevated Murali to mythical status.

The doosra, he explained, is the perfect embodiment of Sri Lankan ingenuity: You think it’s going one way, but it’s actually going the other.

In that moment, Mamdani connected the tactical brilliance of a Sri Lankan sports hero to a piece of life advice that felt universally relatable, and unmistakably Sri Lankan.

But beyond the humour, Mamdani offered something more personal. He spoke of what he’s learned from the Sri Lankan community itself: the value of preparation.

A major city mayor not only acknowledging Sri Lankan culture, but celebrating it with such accuracy and affection, was a moment that struck deep.
