Sarath Weerawansa Released on Bail Over Alleged Vehicle Misuse Case

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s brother, Sarath Weerawansa, has been ordered to be released on bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara today (28).

Weerawansa was granted bail with a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 and two surerities of Rs. 10 million each.

The court also imposed a foreign travel ban and instructed him to hand over his travel documents to the court.

Sarath Weerawansa had been in remand custody since his arrest on July 15 over allegations that he misused 40 government vehicles provided by the Presidential Secretariat during the tenure of his brother, Wimal Weerawansa, as Minister of State Engineering Corporation.

The alleged misuse is said to have caused a financial loss of approximately Rs. 41 million to the government.
