COLOMBO (News 1st); President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says 2026 will be the year in which Sri Lankans regain confidence in justice and fairness, marking a decisive shift in how the rule of law is enforced across the country.
Addressing a gathering in Kundasale, Kandy, the President said he is ready to face any challenge necessary to ensure that no individual stands above the law.
He remarked that the reforms underway may unsettle those who have engaged in wrongdoing, but no innocent person will be harmed.
He said that whether powerful or ordinary, every person will face uniform legal scrutiny as the country moves towards a justice-centered culture.
He added that for years many believed the law would not reach them, relying on influence and protective networks. This belief, he said, turned the law into a spider’s web that caught only the small and allowed the powerful to slip through.
Today, those assumptions are collapsing as legal action reaches everyone equally.
Meanwhile, compensation distribution for homes and industries damaged by Cyclone Ditwah began under the President’s leadership at the Central Provincial Council Auditorium in Kundasale.
Residents from Kundasale, Medadumbara, Pathadumbara and Panvila received the first instalment of Rs. 2,000,000 out of Rs. 5,000,000 allocated for fully damaged homes.
Registered businesses also received Rs. 200,000 each for industrial and machinery damage.
