COLOMBO (News 1st); The Registrar of the Welimada District Court has been remanded until January 27 on allegations of accepting a bribe, following an order issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Liyan Warusuwithana.
According to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), the suspect allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs. 500,000 to facilitate the transfer of possession to rightful owners in a long-standing land case, based on a District Court ruling.
CIABOC revealed that the suspect had instructed the complainant to deliver the bribe in a plastic container at a shop in Welimada town.
The suspect was arrested and produced before the court after being charged with soliciting and accepting a bribe.
The land case in question had been under trial for nearly three decades, and the bribe was allegedly demanded to execute the judgment.
Appearing on behalf of the suspect, Attorney-at-Law S. Dhanushka strongly denied the allegations, requesting bail on any suitable conditions, citing that the suspect is a father of three.
However, the Additional Magistrate rejected the bail application, stating that no exceptional circumstances were presented to justify granting bail.
