COLOMBO (News 1st); All schools across the island are scheduled to reopen tomorrow, but the final decision on reopening will rest with provincial and district authorities, according to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

Speaking during a discussion on school reopening in Nuwara Eliya, Dr. Amarasuriya stressed that safety and well-being must take precedence over rigid schedules.

“We are not saying every school must open on the 16th. Decisions should be based on local conditions—accessibility, transportation, infrastructure, and safety. Our priority is the protection of children, teachers, and principals,” she said.

The Minister urged officials to adopt a flexible, phased approach, allowing schools in safe areas to reopen immediately while others resume gradually.

She emphasized that examinations and syllabus coverage are not the priority right now. Instead, focus should be on students’ mental health, psychosocial well-being, and nutrition programs, especially for those preparing for the 2026 exams.

Dr. Amarasuriya also announced measures to ease burdens on families:

Uniforms are not mandatory for students or teachers.
Hostel facilities and transport support will be provided where needed.
Schools should not enforce strict circulars but act in the best interest of children.

“Education should never become a burden for students, parents, or teachers. Our vision is to ensure every child’s well-being during this recovery phase,” she added.
