Colombo–Kandy Road Section Declared High-Risk Landslide Area

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The section of the Colombo–Kandy main road between kilometres 96 and 99 in Lower Kadugannawa has been identified as a high-risk landslide zone.

The identification was made based on landslide disaster zone maps prepared by the National Building Research Organisation, as well as previous landslides in the area and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Construction work on a project aimed at mitigating the landslide risk in the affected areas is scheduled to commence.

A total of US$101.3 million has been allocated for the project.

This includes US$80 million in foreign loan assistance from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and US$21.3 million by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The project is scheduled to be completed by December next year.
