Flood Risk Persists: Relief Expected After Oct 28 as Low-Pressure Area Nears Depression

COLOMBO (News 1st); According to the Department of Irrigation Kalu and Gin Rivers continue to be at a flood risk level due to the heavy rainfall. The Kalu River has reached the flood risk level in the Millakanda and Magura areas. The Gin River has reached the flood risk level in Baddegama.

The Department of Irrigation has advised residents in the surrounding low-lying areas to remain vigilant. The Department of Irrigation further says that the spill gates of 19 reservoirs currently remain open.

Director of the Water Management Unit of the Department of Irrigation, H. M. P. S. D. Herath, stated that this includes 15 major reservoirs including Deduru Oya and Rajanganaya reservoirs.

Landslide warnings issued for 10 districts remain in effect. Warnings have been issued for Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts. 

The Department of Meteorology has predicted that the low-pressure area persisting over the SouthEastern Bay of Bengal will intensify into a depression today. Director of the Department of Forecasting, Meril Mendis stated that a reduction in rain is expected after the 28th of this month.
