COLOMBO (News 1st); The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka upheld the death sentence imposed by the Tangalle High Court on G.G. Amarasekara, widely known as Julampitiya Amare, for his conviction in a double murder that occurred in 2012.

The ruling was delivered by a bench comprising Justices Janak de Silva, Sobhitha Rajakaruna, and Sampath Wijeratne, who dismissed the appeal filed by Amare’s legal team seeking acquittal and release.

The appeal was rejected without being taken up for full hearing, thereby confirming the original sentence.

Amare was found guilty of opening fire at a political rally organized by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in Katuwana, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and causing critical injuries to another.

Following a lengthy trial, the Tangalle High Court sentenced him to death in 2019.
