COLOMBO (News 1st); The fire that broke out yesterday evening in an empty fuel tank at the Sapugaskanda oil refinery has now been brought under control.
Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe said the incident has not caused any disruption to the country’s fuel supply or distribution.
The Deputy Minister noted that initial investigations suggest the fire may have been triggered by sparks during maintenance work on the unused tank.
According to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the tank in question has a storage capacity of 40,000 metric tons but had not been in operation for several years.
The Fire and Rescue Service Department said that 11 fire trucks were deployed to contain the blaze.
No injuries or casualties were reported as a result of the incident.
