Police Crack Down on Illegal Sand Storage Yards in Kinniya

COLOMBO (News 1st); Police in Trincomalee yesterday took legal action against 17 unauthorized sand storage yards operating in Kandakadu, Kinniya.

Residents said these yards had been operating illegally for a long time despite repeated concerns. 

While many in the area legally extract and transport sand from the Mahaweli River, several operators had been stockpiling sand without valid permits.

Locals had brought the matter to the attention of the DIG in-charge of the Trincomalee District, prompting police to raid the sites. 

Authorities confirmed that the unauthorized storage facilities were dismantled during the operation.
