COLOMBO (News 1st); Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Ratna Gamagé announced that a new insurance scheme for Sri Lankan fisherfolk will be officially launched on August 14.
Deputy Minister Gamagé emphasized that the new scheme marks a major step forward in safeguarding the livelihoods of those engaged in the fisheries sector.
In addition to the insurance program, the government plans to introduce a new pension scheme for the entire fishing community by the end of this year.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Deputy Minister revealed that several development projects are planned for the fisheries industry, including upgrades to fishing harbors, anchorages, and ports.
