COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is set to introduce a comprehensive National Media Policy within the next three months, according to Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

Speaking in Parliament today (7), the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering ethical journalism and improving the quality of media content across both public and private platforms.

Minister Jayatissa revealed that a Code of Media Ethics is currently being drafted. He noted that while various media institutions already operate under their own internal ethical frameworks, there is a growing need for a unified national approach.

The Minister also addressed concerns about the regulation of private television networks, stating that broadcasting licenses are issued under the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act No. 6 of 1982, and that content oversight is conducted in accordance with existing legal provisions. Additionally, he referenced the Finance Act No. 11 of 2006, which governs the import and taxation of foreign dramas, films, and commercial programming.

Jayatissa stressed that the government is focused on enhancing the quality and integrity of media content, not imposing censorship.

The proposed media policy and ethics code are expected to be tabled for public and parliamentary review in the coming month.
