COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet has approved the formation of a Presidential Special Investigation Committee to probe financial irregularities at SriLankan Airlines and the Airport and Aviation Services Limited.

The committee, proposed by the President, will be chaired by former Auditor General Gamini Wijesinghe.

According to the Government Information Department, the committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into alleged fraud, corruption, and malpractice that occurred between 2010 and 2025. The findings will be compiled into a detailed report with recommendations for future action.

Despite its role in supporting the national economy, SriLankan Airlines has become a major financial burden on the state, incurring massive annual losses that the government says are no longer sustainable.

Officials say the ultimate goal is to transform SriLankan Airlines into a profitable, efficient, and technologically advanced public enterprise — one that aligns with the aspirations of the Sri Lankan people.

To achieve this, the government emphasizes the need for a thorough review of past transactions and decisions that led to the airline’s current state.
