Japan Backs Sri Lanka’s War on Corruption

COLOMBO (News 1st); Japan has reiterated its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s efforts to combat corruption and rebuild its economy, emphasizing the importance of transparency and investor confidence in the island nation's path to sustainable growth.

Speaking on the evolving partnership between the two countries, Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, highlighted the critical role of anti-corruption measures in restoring economic stability. “As Sri Lanka navigates through economic challenges, eradicating corruption is critically important for its economic recovery and sustainable growth,” he stated.

Ambassador Isomata stressed that the success of these reforms depends on Sri Lanka’s own determination and self-reliant efforts. He outlined Japan’s plans to enhance Sri Lanka’s institutional capacity, including strengthening prosecution and investigation mechanisms, supporting internal affairs units across over 100 government agencies, and introducing systems such as remote testimony and public monitoring of corruption cases.

He also emphasized the importance of creating a sound business environment to attract foreign investment. “Japanese investors are paying close attention to the changes in Sri Lanka’s financial landscape, with high regard for the new government’s efforts and high expectations,” he said.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Isomata expressed Japan’s interest in seeing a clear mid- and long-term economic development strategy from Sri Lanka, including sector-wide industrial promotion policies. “It will make us better understand what opportunities are available for making fresh investments in Sri Lanka. It will show us a clearer path for how we can better work with Sri Lanka for a mutual benefit.,” he added.
