COLOMBO (News 1st); Justice W. M. N. P. Iddawela, Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), has underscored the critical importance of enforcement in Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption efforts, calling for collective action and institutional strength to uphold integrity in governance.

“Enforcement is at the heart of any credible anti-corruption strategy,” Justice Iddawela stated. “It is not enough to pass laws or launch awareness campaigns. Laws must be enforced, violations must be investigated, and justice must be served—fairly, firmly, and efficiently.”

He emphasized that Sri Lankan citizens are demanding greater accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership. With the recent enactment of a new anti-corruption law and Sri Lanka’s commitment to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), the country now has a clear roadmap for reform.

However, Justice Iddawela stressed that legal frameworks alone are insufficient. “What we now need is a strong partnership, practical tools, and capable institutions,” he said, inviting stakeholders from the justice sector, civil society, academia, and the international community to join forces in the fight against corruption.

“The fight against corruption is not the responsibility of a single institution,” he added. “It’s a collective effort—one that demands vigilance, courage, and commitment from all sectors of society.”
