COLOMBO (News 1st) - Muslims around the world, including in Sri Lanka, are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Hajj Festival, today.
The festival, rooted in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, is observed with a spirit of unity, sacrifice, and devotion.
According to the Islamic calendar, the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah marks the beginning of Eid al-Adha.
It commemorates the unwavering faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son in submission to Allah’s command.
In recognition of his devotion, Allah provided a ram as a substitute for the sacrifice.
Eid al-Adha coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage, which is one of the five fundamental obligations in Islam. Every able-bodied Muslim with the means is expected to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime.
In Sri Lanka, religious ceremonies are being held this morning in Colombo and several other provinces to mark the occasion.
Special prayer services are taking place at key mosques including the Colombo Grand Mosque and the Dawatagaha Jumma Mosque.
