Sri Lankan Cinema Icon Malini Fonseka Passes Away at 78

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Veteran Actress Malini Fonseka, widely revered as the "Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema," passed away this morning at the age of 78 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

Born on April 30, 1947, in Kelaniya, Malini Senehelatha Fonseka began her artistic journey on the stage, eventually becoming a towering figure across theatre, television, and film. 

Her unparalleled talent left an indelible mark on both arthouse and commercial cinema over a career spanning more than five decades.

Fonseka's filmography includes iconic titles such as Nidhanaya, Siripala saha Ranmanika, Bambaru Awith, Kasthuri Suwanda, Thushara, and Ava Soya Adare. 

Her performances earned widespread critical acclaim, not only in Sri Lanka but also on international platforms, elevating Sri Lankan cinema to global recognition.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Fonseka served her country as a Member of Parliament from 2010 to 2015, continuing her legacy of public service and cultural leadership.

Her contribution to the arts has influenced generations, and her passing marks the end of a luminous era in Sri Lankan cinema.
