COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has been remanded until May 26 following his appearance before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today.

The charges stem from his alleged involvement in a financial loss exceeding Rs. 1.3 billion to the government.

The loss is linked to the opening of Letters of Credit (LCs) for the importation of a substandard shipment of Chinese organic fertilizer, prior to obtaining proper legal approvals.

The Attorney General’s Department has accused Aluthgamage of authorizing the transaction in violation of procurement protocols, resulting in a significant financial burden on the state.

Prior to his arrest, Aluthgamage had filed a motion seeking anticipatory bail, requesting the court to release him in the event of an arrest.
