COLOMBO (News 1st): The 16th National War Heroes Commemoration is currently underway at the War Heroes Monument in Battaramulla.
The event is being held under the patronage of the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Anura Kumara Disanayake.
Addressing the commemoration, the President highlighted the importance of unity among all ethnic groups in the country, expressing hope that such solidarity would help prevent another civil war.
He extended his heartfelt appreciation not only to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to bring an end to the conflict, but also to those who were disabled in service, the families of the fallen, and everyone who played a role in ending three decades of bloodshed and division.
The President stressed that these war heroes deserve to be remembered not just on this day, but every day. He affirmed that they must remain in our collective memory, as Sri Lanka will be forever indebted to them for their sacrifice and service.
The three commanders who led the final phase of the war - Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and Air Marshal Roshan Gunatilake are taking part in the commemoration, joined by the current Deputy Minister of Defence, (Retd) Major General Aruna Jayasekara.
Meanwhile, in line with the 16th National War Heroes commemoration, more than 10,000 officers of the Sri Lanka Army have been promoted.
According to the Sri Lanka Army, 10,093 non-commissioned officers have received promotions as a part of this initiative.
