COLOMBO (News 1st) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake promised to eliminate ethnic divisions in Sri Lanka during a rally in Kinniya on Saturday (12) .
The event, part of the National People's Power (NPP) campaign for the upcoming local government elections, saw a large turnout of supporters.
In his speech, the President reflected on how politics in Sri Lanka has traditionally been divided along ethnic lines, with different communities voting for parties that represent their group.
"For too long, our politics has been about division. But the recent elections showed that people from all regions—North, East, and South—are coming together," he said. "This is the change we need. We are moving beyond ethnic politics."
He also addressed critics who claim that the NPP has not done enough for the Muslim community.
"Those who seek division are the ones criticizing us. But we will not let that happen," he said.
The President assured the crowd that his government is committed to maintaining peace and justice for everyone.
