83% of Deaths in Sri Lanka Caused by Non-Communicable Diseases

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Health has revealed that 83% of all deaths in Sri Lanka are due to Non-communicable diseases.

According to data, 35% of people over the age of 60 suffer from high blood pressure. 

Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that nearly 60,000 people suffer strokes annually due to undiagnosed hypertension, with around 4,000 of them either dying or becoming permanently disabled each year.

He further highlighted that 20% of the country's adult population suffers from diabetes, and alarmingly, 41% of them do not seek any treatment.
