COLOMBO (News 1st); A customs inspector, along with two others, were arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau for attempting to smuggle a large consignment of illegal cigarettes through the Katunayake International Airport.
The police reported that the suspects were presented before the Negombo Magistrate's Court yesterday and were released on bail. The court set a bond of Rs. 400,000 for each suspect.
The customs inspector and the two other individuals were caught attempting to remove 60,000 illegal cigarettes from the customs control area of the airport. These cigarettes had been brought into the country from abroad.
It was revealed that the arrested customs inspector is an officer assigned to the Colombo Customs Preventive Division.
While there are many customs officers who perform their duties efficiently and lawfully, the corrupt actions of a few can tarnish the reputation of all public servants.
