COLOMBO (News 1st); Commissioner General of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Law, Attorney-at-Law Nimal Punchihewa, emphasized the importance of ensuring 25% female representation in local government elections.

In a statement, Commissioner General Punchihewa highlighted the necessity of participatory democracy for good governance.

He pointed out that despite women making up over 50% of the population, their representation in governance remains insufficient.

He stressed that achieving 25% female representation in local government is essential for bringing new perspectives and enhancing governance.

Punchihewa noted that women often face challenges and derogatory remarks from male counterparts when participating in public discourse.

He called for legal measures to ensure women are given the opportunities they deserve, as societal structures alone may not provide these chances.
