Tourist Arrivals Surge in Sri Lanka: SLTDA Records Highest Number Since 2018

COLOMBO (News 1st); For the second time in Sri Lankan history, the highest number of tourists to visit the country in a single month has been recorded in January 2025.

Accordingly, the number of tourists who arrived in the country last month is 252,761.

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Buddhika Hewawasam said that the highest number of tourists to arrive in the country since January 2018 was recorded in the past month.

In December 2018, the number of tourists who visited Sri Lanka was 253,169.

However, when comparing with the previous years, the number of tourists who arrived in January 2025 has reached a record high.

In January 2018, 238,924 tourists arrived, while in January 2024, 208,253 tourists arrived.

The highest contribution to tourist arrivals in January this year was from India, and that number stands at 43,375.

In addition, a large number of tourists from Russia, England, China, Germany, France, and Australia had also visited the country.

The Chairman of the SLTDA pointed out that on average, each tourist spends about Rs. 40,000 per day in the country.

He also noted that there are sufficient hotel rooms available for the tourists arriving in Sri Lanka.
