COLOMBO (News 1st); The number of tri-forces personnel participating in the 77th Independence Day celebrations has been reduced by 40%, said Secretary of Defense, Retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyyakontha.

Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Dr. A.H.M. Abeyratne stated that this year's Independence Day celebrations aim to be a true celebration for the citizens of the country.

Unlike previous years, the event will be held at Independence Square instead of Galle Face Green. The minister emphasized the government's commitment to making this a people's celebration.

Secretary of Defense, Retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyyakontha, detailed that the total number of military personnel participating in the parade will be 1,873, a reduction of 1,511 from last year.

Despite the reduction, the parade will maintain its grandeur and dignity. Only three aircraft from the Air Force will participate this year, compared to 19 last year, and there will be no armored vehicle parade. The Navy will conduct a traditional 25-gun salute from a ship at sea.

Senior Deputy Inspector General Lalith Pathinayake mentioned that rehearsals for the Independence Day celebrations are being conducted after school hours to avoid disrupting students. Special security and traffic arrangements involving approximately 1,650 officers are in place for the event.

Officials added that the national anthem will be sung in both Sinhala and Tamil.
