COLOMBO (News 1st); A fire had broken out in a container at the Bandaranaike Quay IV (BQ IV) terminal in the Port of Colombo on Thursday (30) night.
Sri Lanka Navy's firefighting team from the Western Naval Command promptly responded to the emergency, successfully containing the blaze.
At approximately 19:45 hours, smoke was observed emanating from a container at the BQ IV terminal.
The Colombo Port Control Office immediately contacted the Western Naval Command Operations Room, requesting assistance from the Navy's specialized firefighting team.
In response to the alert, the Sri Lanka Navy swiftly mobilized a team with expertise in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) affairs from the Western Naval Command. Firefighting vehicles were also dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the Navy firefighters unlocked the container and discovered that a portion of the stored cleaning chemicals had ignited.
With the assistance of port workers and the port fire brigade, the chemicals were safely removed, effectively containing the fire and preventing its spread.
The prompt and coordinated efforts of the Sri Lanka Navy and port authorities ensured the situation was brought under control without any injuries or significant damage.
