COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Urban Development, Housing, and Construction has announced plans to take measures within the next four months to address waste disposal issues at the Aruwakkalu landfill.
Minister Anura Karunatilaka stated that several factors have prevented the landfill from becoming fully operational.
Minister Karunatilaka highlighted that three waste compactors installed in the Kelaniya area have experienced technical faults and have been reported to Chinese companies for repairs.
Additionally, steps will be taken to rectify deficiencies in the wastewater treatment plant for the waste disposed of at Aruwakkalu.
Following these repairs, plans are in place to transport waste from local government institutions in Colombo and surrounding areas to Aruwakkalu by train. The landfill is expected to handle a capacity of 6,200 metric tons of waste per day.
The project, which began in 2016, has faced delays due to various technical and construction planning issues.
