Sri Lanka Faces Teacher Shortage of Nearly 30,000 Across the Country

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ministry of Education says that there is a nearly-30,000 teacher shortage across the country.

The Ministry's Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa said that there is a shortage of teachers for subjects including English, Science and Mathematics.

Meanwhile general secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Union Joseph Stalin says that it has been impossible for teachers to obtain transfers, with no replacements.

He points out that as a result, many teachers have had to wait until new recruits are hired, to apply for transfers.
