National Engineering Research and Development Centre Develops New Electric Fence to Prevent Elephant Encroachment

COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Engineering Research and Development Centre has successfully developed a new electric fence to prevent wild elephants from entering villages.

Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Krishantha Abeysena, mentioned that the first installation will be done around the Weeravila Open Prison Camp in Hambantota.

He added that the new electric fence was developed after studying scientific methods to prevent elephant encroachment on villages.

The National Engineering Research and Development Centre has collaborated with a private company to design and implement this project.

Senior Lecturer Dr. Jayathu Gunathilaka Samarawickrama stated that many of the electric fences installed in the country are not up to standard.
