Newly elected MPs prepare for the first session of the 10th Parliament

COLOMBO (News 1st) : Over 175 new MPs have been elected to Parliament.

Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadhira announced that a special counter will be set up in Parliament on the 19th and 20th to collect information from all newly elected MPs.

She further stated that MPs will be officially notified on the 18th to attend the first session. 

The 10th Parliament will convene for the first session on the 21st November at 10 a.m. 

During this session, a new Speaker, a Deputy Speaker, and a Deputy Committee Chairman will be elected. 

There will be no specific allocation of seats for members during the first session, allowing MPs to sit wherever they choose.

Parliamentary proceedings will commence after the mace is brought to the chamber.

Following the appointment of the new Speaker, the newly elected MPs would also be sworn in. 

Parliament will then be adjourned until 3 p.m. and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will present the new government's policy statement.

Additionally, a workshop for the newly elected MPs will be held at the Parliamentary complex on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of November. 

This workshop will provide guidance on parliamentary rules and regulations, standing orders, and the working committee system.
