Sri Lanka Holds 2024 Parliamentary Election Today with Over 17 Million Eligible Voters

COLOMBO (News 1st): The 2024 Parliamentary election to elect representatives to the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka, will take place today. 

The voting, which will commence at 7am, will conclude at 4pm today. 

The voting process will be carried out at 13,421 polling stations across the island. 

17,140,354 individuals have been deemed eligible to cast their votes this year. 

The highest number of voters belong to the Gampaha electoral district, and the number stands at 1,881,129. 

The lowest number of voters is recorded in the Mannar electoral district, and the number of eligible voters is 91,607. 

The Sri Lankan Parliament is made up of 225 seats. 

Out of that 225, 196 are elected through the Parliamentary vote. 

The remaining 29 seats will be filled by national list candidates. 

Accordingly, 8,361 candidates will be contesting the 2024 Parliamentary election. 

Out of that, 5,006 candidates will be contesting through recognized political parties, while 3,346 are independent candidates. 

The National Election Commission says that 2,034 vote counting centers have been established across the island. 

About 200,000 state-sector employees have been deployed for election duties.
