COLOMBO (News 1st):The National Election Commission has announced that approximately 50 foreign election observers will participate in monitoring the upcoming General Election.
Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L. Ratnayake confirmed that observers from the European Union have already arrived in Sri Lanka.
Election observers from the Asian Network for Free Elections are expected in the coming days.
Additionally, a group of election observers from eight other countries including representatives from SAARC nations and Russia will also arrive in the island upon the invitation of the National Election Commission.
Meanwhile election observers have noted that the misuse of state property during the election campaign period has been minimal.
However, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies Manjula Gajanayake said that complaints have been received regarding the violation of election laws by certain candidates.
