UPDATE: Up to 260 Years in Prison for Easter Sunday Attack Convicts

COLOMBO (News 1st);The Permanent Trial-at-Bar on Tuesday imposed rigorous imprisonment terms ranging from 200 to 260 years on 15 individuals convicted under 23,270 charges, including conspiracy and aiding and abetting the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

The sentences were handed down by the three-judge bench comprising Navarathna Marasinghe, Ramanathan Kannan and Sujeewa Nissanka, following the delivery of the verdict in the case against 24 accused, including Naufar Maulavi.

According to the sentences imposed, one convict was sentenced to 260 years of rigorous imprisonment, five convicts received 220-year prison terms, four were sentenced to 240 years, and five others were handed 200-year prison terms.

In addition to the prison sentences, the court ordered that all movable and immovable properties belonging to the convicted individuals be confiscated by the State.

The verdict in the long-running case was delivered on Tuesday afternoon. Announcing the judgment, the court found 15 of the accused guilty while acquitting and releasing the remaining nine accused.

The case was heard before the Permanent Trial-at-Bar over the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks carried out in 2019, with the convicted individuals found guilty under thousands of charges relating to conspiracy and providing assistance in connection with the attacks.
