COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has reported an unusual incident of fish washing up along the coastal areas of the Batticaloa District.
Dr. K. Arulanandan, Director General of NARA, stated that the fish had washed ashore due to a drop in seawater temperature.
This temperature decrease is attributed to changes in monsoon patterns, which have altered the water currents.
The affected areas include Kaluwanchikudy, Kalutawela, Thettativu, Kurukkalmadam, and Ontachchimadam, among others.
The species primarily involved in this stranding is the "Pothubari"
This phenomenon is typically observed every year in October.
The fish, which usually reside at depths of around 10 meters, are impacted by these environmental changes.
