Over 100,000 Farmers File Crop Damage Complaints as Rs. 1 Billion Compensation Announced

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board says that a large number of farmers, exceeding 100,000, have filed complaints about the damage to their crops caused by the recent flooding.

Its Chairman, Pemasiri Jasingharachchi, stated that over 200,000 acres of farmland had been damaged by the recent adverse weather conditions experienced in the country.

He added that assessments regarding the damage will commence today.

Jasingharachchi went on to note that farmers should submit their applications within a week from the date they obtained the form. 

He added that the government had allocated a total of Rs. 1 bn to compensate farmers for the damage they had to endure due to disasters which arose as a result of the recent adverse weather conditions.
