COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government of Sri Lanka says the process of amending the law to cancel nominations of the previous local government election has commenced.
Minister Prof. Chandana Abeyratne says the process will be carried out by the Legal Draftsman's Department.
A decision was reached by the cabinet to cancel the nominations of the previous local government election following an agreement by the ministers.
Accordingly, Provincial Council Election Act is to be amended.
The Minister said that the relevant amendments will be submitted to Parliament in the next few weeks after being submitted to the Attorney General’s Department.
He also stated that one of the main objectives for canceling the nominations is to provide an opportunity for 1 Million new candidates.
