COLOMBO (News 1st): Health officials warn that flooding in several districts after the rainy season may lead to an increase in waterborne diseases caused by contaminated water.

Chaminda Muthukuda, the Secretary of the Public Health Inspectors' Union, advises the public to remain vigilant in preventing the spread of diseases such as dengue fever, leptospirosis, and gastrointestinal illnesses in the wake of flooding.

He further advises those affected by floods to verify the safety of their drinking water before consumption and recommends using lukewarm water to eliminate any germs introduced by floodwater contamination.

Additionally, he urges the public to thoroughly clean surfaces that may have been exposed to contaminated water to minimize the risk of spreading infectious diseases.
