COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Aviation has called for tenders for the construction of the second passenger terminal at Katunayake International Airport.

According to the Ministry's Secretary, K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, the project will be funded through Japanese loans.

Although the terminal was initially planned for construction in 2019, the economic crisis delayed the project.

Secretary Ruwanchandra stated that the new terminal will accommodate 9 million passengers annually.

Currently, the passenger terminal one at Katunayake International Airport serves 6 million passengers per year.

With the addition of the second terminal, the airport's capacity will increase to 15 million passengers annually.
