COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Department of Wildlife Conservation has launched a comprehensive wild elephant survey, the first of its kind in 13 years.

The survey, which began on Saturday, is set to continue, aiming to gather crucial data on the elephant population across Sri Lanka.

The survey involves observations at 3,130 centers nationwide, with a deployment of 7,300 officers dedicated to data collection.

This extensive effort is a collaborative initiative, involving the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the National Zoological Park Department, the Forest Conservation Department, the Armed Forces, and university students.

Data is being collected under various categories, including female elephants, male elephants, and other classifications. This initiative is expected to provide valuable insights into the current status of the wild elephant population and inform future conservation efforts.
