Code of Criminal Procedure: Sri Lanka Hikes Fines for Election Offenses

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The fine for Bribery in connection with an election has been increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1 million.

The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill was signed by Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and gazetted for public review.

If bribery by treating, the fine has been increased to Rs. 750,000 from Rs. 200.

The fine for undue influence an election that stood at Rs. 500 has increased to Rs. 100,000.

The fine for personation at an election that stood at Rs. 300 now stands at Rs. 100,000.

The draft Bill proposes increasing fines for many offenses under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
