COLOMBO (News 1st); Following the meeting of party leaders today (18) , Minister Mahinda Amaraweera stated that no constitutional amendments will be presented in the upcoming parliament week.

Speaking to reporters outside the parliament, Amaraweera said that the Presidential Election, slated for this year, will take place as planned.

He said that given the fact that the Election Commission will declare the election in due course, efforts to move constitutional amendments would not derail the process of holding the presidential election.

However, he clarified that the cabinet-approved constitutional amendments aims to rectify a certain discrepancy, and it is possible for such a constitutional amendment to be moved even after the election.

He said that the proposed constitutional amendment has not been placed in the parliamentary agenda for the upcoming weeks.

He dismissed allegations made by the opposition that claim that the constitutional amendment is being moved in an effort to delay the poll, adding that such comments are being made as the opposition has nothing else to day.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that is no requirement to delay the election, and no one would allow it as well.
