COLOMBO (News 1st) - The final rites of Surendra Wasantha Perera alias Club Wasantha, who was brutally gunned down in Athurugiriya on Monday, will be carried out on Saturday (13), at the Borella Cemetery.
The body currently lies at a private funeral parlor in Borella.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa says that special police security has been deployed in the area.
This step was taken after an anonymous phone call was received, advising against holding final rites for Surendra Wasantha Perera.
Club Wasantha or Surendra Wasantha Perera was fatally shot last Monday morning in the Athurigiriya area.
Another individual named Nayana Vasula Wijesuriya also lost his life in the shooting.
4 others including Club Wasantha's wife and popular local singer K. Sujeewa, were injured.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe expressed concern in Parliament that media leaks of internal crime information could hinder the pursuit of justice.
Minister Rajapakshe's statement comes amidst growing public scrutiny of the police's handling of criminal investigations.
He urged the media to refrain from publishing sensitive information that could jeopardize ongoing cases.
In a separate development, Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, has reissued a circular instructing officers to refrain from releasing photos and personal information of suspects to the media.
The circular emphasizes that suspects are innocent until proven guilty and should be treated with respect.
