COLOMBO (News 1st);Sri Lanka's Ministry of Defense said Sri Lanka has made history by achieving Tier 2 status in the U.S. Department of State's Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report for the third consecutive year.

The MOD said the accomplishment underscores the country's sustained efforts to combat human trafficking and protect its victims.

It added that National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (NAHTTF), under the leadership of the Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne has been pivotal in this achievement.

As the Chair of the NAHTTF, the Defence Secretary has provided essential guidance and strategic direction, ensuring continued progress in Sri Lanka’s fight against human trafficking.

The 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report by the US State Department revealed that the Sri Lanka does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so.

It added that the government demonstrated overall increasing efforts compared with the previous reporting period; therefore Sri Lanka remained on Tier 2.

These efforts included increasing convictions of labor traffickers and identifying and providing services to more trafficking victims.
