International Day of Peace: A World on the Brink of War?

Peace is often defined as the absence of war. Each year the International Day of Peace (IDP) is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations was formed following the most brutal war in history, the second World War. 

The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.The theme for the year is "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals". According to the UN, fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

However despite the many calls for peace and prosperity from local and foreign authorities, there has been no improvement towards it both in Sri Lanka and around the world. 

Many parts of the globe are ravaged in conflict today.

One of the most documented wars in history, the Ukraine war has made headlines across the world since Russia's hostile attacks in February 2022. In the Asian continent the Chinese and Indian geopolitical agendas have begun to simmer. For instance the G20 Summit; It was the first time a Chinese leader has not attended the summit since the first was held in 2008. 

In the African continent; Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted from office by a group of soldiers hours after members of his guard detained him at the presidential palace in the capital, throwing the country into political turmoil.

As the International Day of Peace is observed today in the backdrop of all these conflicts; the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, the 54th session of the Human Rights Council are all taking place today.
