COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Wildlife Conservation said extensive investigations are underway regarding the turtle carcasses which piled up along the beach from Wellawatte to Galle Face.

Director General at the Department of Wildlife Conservation Chandana Sooriyabandara said facts were tabled in court regarding the incident.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate on Tuesday (22) ordered the Department to conduct post-mortem examinations on the dead turtles and report facts to court.

10 turtle carcasses piled up on the beach from Wellawatte to Galle Face within two days.

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) said 10 turtles of the same size belonging to the same species had died in this manner.

NARA added that water samples in the sea area between Wellawatte and Galle Face will be tested to determine if the ocean water affected the turtles.
