Dry Spell: Wild animals in Yala in crisis due to water scarcity

COLOMBO (News 1st); Wild animals at the Yala National Park are suffering due to the lack of water, as almost all the water bodies within the park premises have dried up to arid weather condition.

Chief Park Ranger of the Yala National Park Manoj Indraratne told News 1st that deer and moose are also facing a shortage of food.

He said that a proposal was presented to the Ministry of Wildlife to temporarily close down the Yala National Park.

It has come to light that animal fall prey to poachers, when they roam out of the Yala National Park premises in search of water.

The Chief Park Ranger said that almost 100,000 liters of water is being added to the water bodies within the Yala National Park using water trucks.

He added that 20% of the wewa's within the Yala National Park have dried up.
